Details of Achievements :

Major Activities/Achievements : Indian Alcohol Policy Alliance (IAPA) is a Non Governmental Organization, established and registered under the Indian Trust Act in 2004, to prevent alcohol related harm through evidence based policy intervention, advocacy and capacity building. IAPA is affiliated to the Global Alcohol Policy Alliance (GAPA) and is supported by FORUT – Campaign for Development and Solidarity. The activity of IAPA was formally launched at a National Seminar on “Alcohol Abuse, Policy and Advocacy” organized in association with the Directorate of Prohibition, Govt. of Delhi on May 4, 2005 at the Government Secretariat Hall, New Delhi. Dr. Yoganand Shastri, Hon’ble Minister for Health & Social Welfare, Govt. of Delhi inaugurated the Seminar. The Launching Ceremony of the “Alcohol Atlas of India” was held at the Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi on 29th April 2008. Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss (Hon’ble Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Government of India) was the Chief Guest on the occasion and he released the Manual by handing over the first copy to Dr. Vijay Chandra (WHO Regional Advisor on Mental Health & Substance Abuse for South East Asia). The Alcohol Atlas is a useful reference guide for policy makers, professionals, national and international organizations and institutions who are engaged on alcohol issues. As part of IAPA’s Campaign against Drinking & Driving in India, a National Consultative Meeting on Prevention of Drinking and Driving was organized on 21st April, 2006 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi to discuss the strategies and recommendations on prevention of drinking and driving in India. A Meeting of the National Core Group on Alcohol Policy was convened by IAPA on July 30, 2007 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi to discuss ‘Recommendations for an Alcohol Control Policy for India’. Dr. S. Arul Rhaj (Chairman, IAPA) presided. Mr. A. C. Kher IAS (Leading Lawyer & Former Excise Commissioner) presented an overview analysis of the Excise Policy situation in India, the Policies followed by the various State Governments in the country and the need to have a uniform National Excise Policy for India. And IAPA continues to explore new avenues to achieve its vision and mission.
