The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, CHRI ys an independent non partisan international non governmental organisation headquartered in New Delhi India. It mandate to ensure the practical realisation of human rights across the Commonwealth. CHRI was founded in 1987 in London by Commonwealth profession associations doctors journalists lawyers legal educators and joined later by parliamentarians broadcasters publishers and trades unions as they felt that while member countries had both a common set of values and legal principles from which to work and a forum within which to promote human rights there was little focus on human rights issues. The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, CHRI shifted its Headquarter from London to New Delhi India in 1993 and established its Africa office in Accra in 2001. CHRIs overall objective is to achieve the practical realization of human rights in the lives of ordinary people across the Commonwealth. To this end it promotes awareness of and adherence to the Harare Commonwealth Declaration the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other internationally recognised human rights instruments as well as in-country laws and policies. Our institutional goal is to continue to build ourselves into a premier South based resource able not only to bring about systemic reforms in the area of access to justice and access to information but to also assist others in this endeavour. CHRI addresses the national and international human rights infrastructure by advocating for effective responses from it building capacity of civil society to address this complex of bodies building platforms for dialogue between civil society and government and working with large networked organizations to incorporate access to information and access to justice as core areas of their work.
