Details of Achievements :

Action For Food Production – AFPRO is a non-profit, non-government organisation (NGO) that co-ordinates, evaluates and gives technical service, guidance and back-up support to grassroots NGOs for the implementation of environmentally sound food production and related projects. To achieve its goals it attempts integrated development of water resources, agriculture, animal husbandry, renewable sources of energy, etc., through conservation and regeneration of the environment and ecosystem.AFPRO endeavors to bring together the resources of overseas funding agencies, Government agencies, financial institutions and grassroots level NGOs for implementation of developmental projects to improve the quality of life of the weaker sections of the rural community. Core Activities promoted by AFPRO Water & Sanitation  Promotion of centralized, decentralized and community based drinking water, Hygiene and sanitation development programmes to provide basic facilities for environmentally healthy living which includes  Hydro-geological Surveys, Well-Siting, Drinking Water and Sanitation, Minor Irrigation, Water Yield Testing, Training for Rain Water Harvesting, Developing locally suitable water harvesting and storage structures  Specific technology and innovations o Horizontal roughing filter and slow sand filter for quality drinking water o Chua wells, Ring wells, Bore wells, tube wells, and hand pumps o Drip irrigation, lift irrigation o River barrier (Dykes) and Diversion channels in high temperate geo-hydro-thermo regimes o Gravity flow systems o Low cost bamboo leach pit latrines  Organizing awareness and motivational camps on safe drinking water hygiene and sanitation Watershed Management – Soil & Water conservation  Social, technical and economic dimensions  Check dams, anicuts, diversion weir and channels, gully plugs, contour bunds, contour trenches, peripheral bunds, farm bunds, gabion structures, farm ponds, etc Food Security  Sustainable Agriculture – Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT), IPM, Vermi-composting and organic manure, Horticulture and herbal medicinal plants, Promotion of mixed-cropping practices, Discouraging shifting cultivation, Dry land farming technology in arid to semi-arid regions  Forestry – JFM, CFM, Pasture land development, Promotion of social and agro-forestry  Fisheries and Fisher folk Development – Aquaculture – freshwater and marine  Disaster Preparedness in cyclone affected areas  Animal husbandry  Guidance and Training on livestock rearing practices  Barefoot Veterinary Technicians’ Training Rural Energy & Biogas  Research and Development in Energy Sector specially on Bio-gas plants, bio-mass based heating systems and dissemination of information and transfer of proven technology  Integrating biogas with renewable energy technologies such as energy plantations, improved wood-stoves installation, wind and solar energy harvesting devices, etc. Integrate renewable energy systems based on animal and human power (for water lifting, transportation, post harvest processing, etc.) plantation of fuel and farming systems as well as promotion of Integrated Rural Energy Programme (IREP) by involving grassroots level NGOs. Introduction of software based Techniques  Introduced latest spatial decision making tool, GIS and Remote Sensing in the programmes.
