Details of Achievements :

Major Activities/Achievements of Grassroots India Trust : Young Citizens Media Project on Urban Governance: Supported by Urban Youth Fund of UN HABITAT the project addresses the problems of sustainable urban development and growing trend of misgovenance within urban local bodies. Through the Young Citizens Media the project stimulates local citizens initiatives on refroming/ strengthening the urban governance and inclusive urban development. Young Citizens Forums at neighbourhood level performs the media advocacy and citizens audit on municipal functions, delivey of development services, poverty alleviation schemes, civic services, water and sanitation services, etc. also by involving adult citizens. It is implemented in Meerut, Ghaziabad, Aligarh cities of Uttar Pradesh covering about 20000 citizens. IEUPC Education Project: Grassroots India Trust GIT has been implementing this mega scale project on girl child education at 15 locations in Meerut, Aligarh and Moradabad cities. Funded by EUROPEAN COMMISSION, the project has already imparted education to 2400 girl children upto Vth class, whilst 2000 girls have got vocational training. The project is continuing with current admissions of about 1700 gilrs every year belonging to marginalized communities in urban poverty zones. The curriculum includes strongly the lessons on Water & Sanitation, Health & Hygiene and Gender Rights. Postcard Campaign on National Rural Housing & Habitat Policy: Awareness among villagers in 20 provinces of India was created through postcards. 500000 postcards were distributed throughout India. About 100000 villagers signed the postcards and sent them to Prime Minister of India for pursuing the National Rural Housing & Habitat Policy 2007. The Campaign was executed in collaboration of Development Alternatives, and was supported by PACS Program of DFID. Mainstreaming Children’s Voices in Print Media: In a short time of 5 months, 43 stories/ articles written by children got placed/ published in mainstream Hindi newspapers. GIT honed the skills of children and prepared then to act as media citizens. The children whose skills were developed on reporting and writing wrote the news and stories on issues of developed such as Poverty, Unsafe Drinking Water, Poor Health, Gender Violence, Mis-governance, Violation of Child Rights, and Rural Underdevelopment. Agro-Biodiversity Conservation & Food Security: Mapping of agro-biodiversity in 22 villages has brought about 437 farmer families together to establish 3 seed banks in panchayat headquarters in Banjar tehsil of Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh. They borrow the seeds during sowing season. It is benefiting more the Dalit farmers who were otherwise deprived of good quality seeds. Efforts to link the organic produce of traditional crops with the market are continuing, which intends to improve incomes from farming of traditional breeds of crops. Women Empowerment: About 700 women were educated about their rights in Kullu district. Men and women of 360 villages in Banjar and Kullu tensils were sensitized about the gender problems in rural society. About 200 women in 5 villages of Ghaziabad district in western Uttar Pradesh and about 3000 women in Meerut, Aligarh, Ghaziabad and Moradabad cities are sensitized for their merciful situations in the families and society.
