ABHAS in Sanskrit means brilliance and stands for Action beyond Help and Support. It was registered, as a public charitable trust in October 2002 with an aim to promote the rights of children and adolescents by creating greater opportunities for them to enjoy better quality of life. Today ABHAS works to reduce gender disparity in education and reaches out to more than 6000 urban disadvantaged children through its various educational initiatives. Peoples participation and child centered approach is integral to all programs of ABHAS. Its strength lies in mobilizing communities and building linkages with Government schools and functionaries to ensure the child’s right to education ABHAS started a Children Community library in Tughlakabad in early of 2003 to promote reading habit among children especially girls who had to leave school. Besides providing them a place to read books, the library became a space for girls to come together discuss issues and speak their minds. During this time we developed an excellent rapport with the 6000 migrant families, many of whose children, especially girls, were out of school and many of whom had never been to school. This only strengthened our resolve of Every Girl in School and completion of elementary education for all children. To achieve this ABHAS designed programs, which cater to the educational needs of the urban marginalized girls at each stage of her growing up and also provide the backward and forward linkages in the form of programs for girls to access quality education, while addressing issues of security and protection. Pehla Kadam for the 3 to 5 age group TEACH Plus and the Reading Room Program for children of primary school going age, the Girls Education Program and a School Health And Hygiene Program for middle and secondary school girls, TEACH and the Community Learning Center a program for Youth, and a Girls Interest Centre to ensure learning and recreational rights of the girls. Building on this, our work in the last six years has helped us to reach out to more than 6000 disadvantaged and socially excluded girls living in urban slum communities and urban villages of Delhi and Noida ensuring out of school girls access elementary education and school going girls stay in school longer. This year 5 of our girls have passed the class 10 board examination with flying colours and have secured in the desired stream in Sarvodyaya Vidyalayas. This academic year ABHAS will prepare the next batch of 25 girls for the class 10 exams. Progressively in the last four years our girls have secured the first three positions in their school exams. The remarkable change in the education status, self esteem and confidence of the girls has made them role models for others in the community. ABHAS is a professionally managed NGO with a committed, experienced team of professional social workers having a rich and varied experience of working with marginalized and disadvantaged children and issues affecting them
