Major Activities/Achievements : The primary activity of the Ina Raja Memorial Education Trust is to provide free remedial education to children from extremely poor families. The Trust helps these children excel at school as well as empower them through theatre, music and art. We also offer modest financial assistance to a small number of students depending on their need and potential to do well. The majority of the children targeted by Ina Raja Memorial Education Trust are officially enrolled in state run schools, which is the only education option available for the urban poor. The problem associated with the state run schools are numerous and well documented. These schools suffer from a lack of material resources, inept management and largely unmotivated teaching staff. Consequently, they have a large drop-out rate beyond primary school and are notorious for their inability to inculcate even simple literacy skills in their students, even after 5 to 6 years of schooling. In addition, Ina Raja Memorial Education Trust has a group of 10 non-school going children primarily girls, working as domestic help in the neighborhood, who have shown keen interest in getting an education. After school, the home for most children is the street. The children come largely from migrant families and many don’t have a permanent home in the city. Their parents work hourly jobs as domestic helps, construction site labour, rickshaw pullers etc. At night the family returns to a shanty dwelling in urban slums. While starvation is not an issue with these children, the nutrition value of their diet is questionable. The majority of the children that the Trust works with are underfed or chronically malnourished, which severely affects their cognitive abilities.
Currently, there are 120 children in the care of the Trust. The Center occupies 1400 sq. ft. of space in the Hari Nagar locality of West Delhi. It employs eight teachers and three volunteers. The Center has a nascent library with about 3000 books as well as the means for indoor recreation. In any given year, students engage in at least two or three public events in the area of theatre, music, arts or public speaking. Over the last few years, nutrition has become an important adjunct to the teaching program.
Our sixteen years of experience of working in the field is our biggest advantage. We are close to the social problem we are addressing and have become recognized in the community for our work. Most importantly, we have precious real estate in the heart of West Delhi dedicated to the children’s use. We manage a total budget of approximately Rs 10 lakhs (Rs. 1 million) annually. The Trust is registered according to the rules laid down by the competent authority. Since 1997 income tax returns of the Trust accounts have been filed regularly.
